South Shore University Hospital Pavilion Topping Out Ceremony Marks Major Milestone in Campus Transformation
South Shore University Hospital (SSUH) reached a major milestone in its $468 million campus expansion as EwingCole, Northwell Health, and construction partners celebrated the topping out of the hospital’s new seven-story pavilion.
Bay Shore, NY – Northwell Health’s South Shore University Hospital (SSUH) reached an exciting milestone in its ongoing transformation with the topping out of its new six-story pavilion. A ceremony was held at the hospital’s Bay Shore campus to celebrate the placement of the final steel beam, signed by members of the design, construction, and facilities teams alongside Northwell Health and South Shore Hospital Leadership.
Designed by EwingCole, the $468 million, six-story pavilion project is a significant element of SSUH’s master plan to evolve from a community hospital into a comprehensive care campus serving the growing needs of Suffolk County’s South Shore communities. When completed, the pavilion will span 190,000 SF and house up to 90 private patient rooms, 10 additional operating rooms, and three procedure rooms. The project is on track for completion by the second quarter of 2026.
“We are proud to celebrate this important milestone for South Shore University Hospital,” said Mary Frazier, AIA, LEED AP, director of healthcare planning for EwingCole. “This new pavilion is a key part of Northwell Health’s vision for providing a modern healthcare facility that offers superior care while reflecting the charm and character of the Bay Shore community.”
The pavilion is designed to enhance patient experience and clinical care with an emphasis on sustainability. A striking exterior blends Maganese Iron-spot brick and wood-look phenolic panels, framing a welcoming entry garden and lobby. Large curtain walls bring abundant daylight into patient rooms and common areas, creating a serene and healing environment. Green spaces, public areas, and a sky bridge connecting to the existing hospital will further elevate the experience for patients, visitors, and staff.

“The topping out marks a critical point in this project, and we couldn’t be more excited,” said Peter Welsh, Project Manager at EwingCole. “This pavilion represents our team’s commitment to creating spaces that support patient well-being and staff efficiency. We look forward to delivering a state-of-the-art healthcare facility to the Bay Shore community.”
The collaborative efforts of all involved have been essential in overcoming challenges and ensuring the project progresses smoothly, reflecting the dedication and expertise of the entire project delivery team.
“Today symbolizes a great achievement for the entire project team,” said Senior Project Architect Emmanuel Gee, AIA, BECxP, CxA+BE, LEED AP. “Having this project out of the ground is a testament to the collaborative partnership of the project stakeholders, and I look forward to continuing our work toward delivering a successful project.”
The complexity of the SSUH expansion required seamless coordination between multiple stakeholders, including the Northwell Health facilities team, the Stantec project management team, and the construction managers Suffolk and LF Driscoll.
“We are honored to manage the construction of the South Shore University Hospital Pavilion for Northwell Health. This world-class healthcare facility will provide the highest-quality care for patients on Long Island,” said Tom Giordano, General Manager of Suffolk in New York. “Like Northwell Health, our project team leverages data and the most sophisticated tools, technologies, and processes to provide more predictable, seamless, and efficient outcomes. So today, we celebrate an important milestone in our project schedule and commitment to deliver the South Shore University Hospital Pavilion project on schedule and on budget.”
The SSUH expansion is part of a long-term plan supporting the region’s growing healthcare needs. This project underscores SSUH’s commitment to improving the health of its communities and offering the highest standard of care.
