Grand Opening of Lincoln Financial Center Marks New Era for Cobbs Creek Golf Course in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA, PA (April 2026) – The Cobbs Creek Foundation and EwingCole celebrated the official grand opening of the Lincoln Financial Center at Cobbs Creek Golf Course, marking a significant milestone in the revitalization of one of Philadelphia’s most historic public golf destinations. The project positions Cobbs Creek at the intersection of golf, hospitality, and community, reintroducing the course as a premier destination for players, visitors, and the broader community.
Designed in collaboration by EwingCole and Blackney Hayes Architects, and constructed by LF Driscoll, the Lincoln Financial Center represents a major step in restoring this beloved course while redefining the role of hospitality in public golf clubhouses. As the interior architect, EwingCole shaped an experience that welcomes both avid golfers and first-time visitors, reinforcing Cobbs Creek’s legacy as an inclusive and accessible destination.
“It’s not only about golf. It’s about building the local and greater Philadelphia community through active participation in sports and education,” said Bill McCullough, AIA, director of sports & entertainment at EwingCole. “This facility will bring us together as we enjoy one of the greatest games ever played, in a facility designed to be a first-class experience for all visitors. We’re grateful the Cobbs Creek Foundation asked us to be part of it. It’s going to build community engagement and revenue for the city for decades to come.”
EwingCole’s interior design places hospitality at the forefront, drawing from both the natural landscape and the deep history of Cobbs Creek to create a warm, inviting environment. The design reflects a shift in traditional clubhouse design, where social experience, comfort, and accessibility carry equal importance to the game itself.
“The design replaces the formality of traditional golf clubs with a more approachable strategy rooted in accessibility, versatility, and community engagement,” said Architect Matt Scheller. “Every visitor should feel welcome and have a reason to return.”
The facility includes a restaurant and bar now known as The Little Horse Tavern, an event space, and a pro shop operated by Troon Golf. Interiors connect seamlessly to the surrounding course, using materials, textures, and spatial flow to echo the character of the landscape while creating a cohesive hospitality experience. The Heritage Center, which will further celebrate Cobbs Creek’s history and cultural impact, is currently in development and will open at a later date.
“Nature is inherently inclusive, and we wanted our interior spaces to reflect that same spirit—welcoming and accessible to all,” said Scheller. “It was important to us that non-golfers feel just as comfortable coming here to enjoy a meal or join a group outing as those who are here to practice their swing.”
Social connection is central to the design. The restaurant and event spaces, created in collaboration with Fitler Club, pair elevated food and beverage offerings with the flexibility to host community gatherings, tournaments, and private events, reinforcing Cobbs Creek’s role as both a neighborhood destination and a regional draw.
A centrally positioned bar along the exterior wall anchors the venue, offering panoramic views of the course and driving range. Lounge seating by a fireplace, communal tables, and a mix of dining configurations create a variety of experiences that support both everyday use and special events. The result is a hospitality-driven environment that encourages people to gather, relax, and engage with the course in new ways.
Cobbs Creek, originally opened in 1916, has long stood as a pioneering public golf course, known for welcoming women and African Americans at a time when many courses did not. EwingCole’s design reflects and extends this legacy, creating a space that feels open, inclusive, and connected to the community it serves. As the broader campus continues to evolve, the revitalized facility is expected to play a key role in attracting future regional and national golf events, including PGA Tour events.
With the opening of the Lincoln Financial Center, Cobbs Creek enters a new chapter, one that brings together golf, hospitality, and community investment to reestablish the course as a cornerstone of Philadelphia’s golf culture and a model for the future of public golf destinations.
