Built in 1982, an expansion and renovation of the County of Riverside Public Health Laboratory were developed to meet the needs of the 2020 demand forecast and beyond. The new Public Health Lab afforded the county increased testing capacity and improved safe working environments by providing an efficient flow for laboratory staff and for infectious disease specimens, from incoming receipt at the facility through the various BSL2 laboratory areas, including flexible lab spaces and dedicated BSL3 Suites. The project reduced the laboratory density and improved special workspaces required for handling infectious disease specimens. The design approach included a detailed phasing plan that allowed the existing lab to remain operational throughout construction.
