Coulson Family Training Complex

Philadelphia, PA

The University of Pennsylvania sought to enhance the experience for its football student-athletes at the historic Franklin Field. Limited space under the east stands posed a challenge for creating a modern, expansive facility. EwingCole partnered with the athletics program to design an innovative two-story facility with reconfigured concourses, expanding locker rooms, meeting spaces, storage, and accommodations for all the track and field athletes.

Legend has it that when asked about the team’s colors, a Penn captain famously declared, “We’re going to wear the colors of the teams we beat,” symbolizing the team’s competitive spirit. The red and blue, representing two fierce rivals, have since defined Penn football. This bold color scheme and the iconic “Split P” logo were central to the design of the new football facilities, with vibrant uses of red and blue throughout. From the entryway to locker room ceiling panels, the design fosters team pride and connection.

The professional-grade facility improves athlete experience, attracts recruits, and fosters team pride. The new locker room features ventilated lockers, spa-like showers, and tiered meeting spaces for the entire team to assemble. The second-floor meeting rooms included operable glass partitions that open up to create an entertainment space with stunning views of Penn Park and the Philadelphia skyline.

"Ewing Cole designed a world-class football facility for the University of Pennsylvania, skillfully combining modern design with the historic charm of Franklin Field, the nation’s oldest operating stadium. The facility features upgraded locker rooms that promote team camaraderie and comfort, along with team meeting spaces outfitted with advanced technology to enhance player development and game preparation. This seamless integration of cutting-edge functionality within the iconic stadium preserves its legacy while addressing the evolving needs of Penn’s student-athletes and coaches. The innovative design ensures the football program will thrive in an environment that celebrates both tradition and progress for years to come."
