Emergency Department Expansion

Penn State Health’s Milton S. Hershey Medical Center is a Level I Trauma Center providing Central Pennsylvania high-level, patient-focused care. In anticipation of growth, the health system needed to expand its existing emergency department. EwingCole planned and designed the expansion to increase overall patient capacity, improve patient and provider flow and department efficiency, and support realignment of the entire emergency department. The overall project provides additional patient care spaces, a trauma room, EMS staging areas, an expanded contamination area, a security center, and other support spaces for the ED. The design team focused on creating a welcoming environment that further facilitates healing, including views to a healing garden from the main waiting room and the adjacent cancer center. The project also including the expansion of the surgical suites to provide three new Neuro ORs with the most advanced technologies. The third floor expansion includes office and conference areas and a mechanical penthouse.
