South Shore University Hospital Begins Groundbreaking New Chapter in Long Island

This week marked a significant milestone for Long Island residents as Northwell Health proudly hosted the groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of South Shore University Hospital (SSHU). Renowned as one of the nation’s top 50 heart surgery hospitals, SSHU is investing substantially in enhancing healthcare services for Suffolk County residents. This endeavor underscores SSHU’s unwavering commitment to solidify further its position as the flagship hospital of Northwell Health in Suffolk County, featuring a state-of-the-art patient pavilion.

Designed by EwingCole, the innovative 190,000-square-foot, six-story inpatient bed-tower addition represents a leap forward in patient care while preserving the distinct character of the surrounding Long Island community. At $468 million, the new pavilion will encompass 90 individual patient rooms, ten cutting-edge operating rooms, and three additional procedure rooms, reflecting SSHU’s dedication to meeting the community’s evolving healthcare needs.

The design team at EwingCole collaborated closely with various multidisciplinary internal groups – as well as design and construction partners at Suffolk Construction, LF Driscoll, VHB, Severud Associates, and AFK Engineers LLF – to create a serene and patient-focused facility that seamlessly harmonizes the existing structure with the new expansion. This holistic approach not only enhances clinical efficiency but also offers increased flexibility for medical staff. The new pavilion will provide additional inpatient beds, operating rooms, green and public spaces, expanded surgical services, and a sky bridge that connects seamlessly to existing facilities. The exterior’s patterned glass design ensures patient privacy, maximizes the infusion of natural light, and offers picturesque views of the town and oceanfront.
