Wexford Science + Technology, an innovation hub dedicated to entrepreneurial research and design, sought to renovate the historic Chesterfield Building in Durham, NC. Constructed in 1948, the building had remained vacant since 2001. EwingCole’s design team took careful steps to preserve and repair the building structure and replicate the original window design. The distinctive exterior red brick was repaired and restored while its interior stripped down to the basic building structure and refitted with new mechanical and electrical, fire protection and vertical transportation systems. The addition of a new entrance at the first-floor level now provides space for retail tenants.
