Saint Joseph’s University is dedicated to fostering personal health and well-being among its students, faculty, and staff. However, its existing recreation center was undersized, outdated, and difficult to navigate, limiting access to fitness and wellness programs. To better serve the campus community, the university sought to transform the facility into a modern, inclusive, and engaging recreation destination.
EwingCole reimagined the existing space, strategically redistributing and expanding wellness programming while integrating dedicated space for the baseball, softball, field hockey, and tennis teams. By carefully studying the university’s needs, the design team developed a cohesive, student-focused environment that enhances accessibility, functionality, and visibility. The revitalized center now offers:
The contemporary design includes a wide range of student fitness spaces, allowing for a variety of equipment that dramatically improves student access to recreational activities. Navigating the multiple floors of the two conjoined buildings has been dramatically simplified, and the facilities are now accessible to everyone. Bold colors and graphics create a clear circulation path, seamlessly guiding students through the interconnected buildings. Once-separated spaces are now open and visible through additional exterior glazing, glass railings, and partitions, transforming the facility into a fresh and vibrant campus amenity.
By transforming once-disjointed spaces into a seamless, high-performance wellness hub, Saint Joseph’s University has strengthened its commitment to student health, athletics, and campus life – ensuring that recreation remains an integral part of the university for years to come.
