September 2024 (Philadelphia, PA) – The built environment isn’t one-size-fits-all. Factors like race, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic background, family life, career paths, and abilities impact how we navigate the world around us. These unique perspectives are vital to the design process. The spaces we occupy can either hinder or help us. Therefore, designers must consider a wide range of intersecting identities and experiences to create inclusive designs that exceed basic necessity.
Design Thinking is a human-centered approach that focuses on understanding users’ needs, experiences, and challenges. It’s a process that includes five stages: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test. This approach to design fosters collaboration between creators and end-users to develop unique, inclusive solutions, making it valuable across industries like architecture, product design, and technology.
Design Thinking Unplugged invites participants to engage with this process, regardless of experience level. Alongside design professionals at EwingCole, we will bring our unique perspectives into the design process, ensuring that everyone feels heard and supported. During a hands-on activity, participants will co-design a public space: a clinic waiting room. You’ll collaborate with others to create a functional, welcoming environment, sharing your personal experiences and exploring needs versus wants. Through role-playing scenarios and using available materials, you’ll help shape a unique prototype that reflects diverse perspectives.
