The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in Newport News, Virginia, is a national laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy where scientists worldwide explore the fundamental building blocks of matter. To support cutting-edge research, the lab sought to redevelop an environmentally degraded service yard into a forward-looking facility that fosters collaboration and scientific advancement.
The result is the 188,000-square-foot Technology and Engineering Development Facility (TEDF), designed to unify staff and streamline operations across engineering and research teams. The building creates a team-oriented environment by standardizing and optimizing the flow of people, information, materials, and waste throughout the facility.
Certified LEED Gold, the TEDF incorporates sustainable design principles and flexible workspaces that enhance energy efficiency and long-term adaptability. It serves as a critical support hub for the lab’s particle accelerator programs, enabling the development of complex components and systems in a setting designed for cross-disciplinary innovation.
With this transformation, the TEDF strengthens the lab’s research capabilities and reflects a long-term investment in environmental stewardship and collaborative excellence.
