Soldier Field Renovations

Chicago, IL

Soldier Field, the oldest stadium in the NFL, is a cultural landmark that hosts over 190 events each year, drawing 1.4 million spectators to the heart of Chicago. With a legacy of hosting NFL games, Major League Soccer matches, and major concerts, the stadium plays a pivotal role in the city’s civic and entertainment life.

To remain competitive and meet the demands of modern audiences, a business, civic, and community coalition initiated plans to modernize the facility. The goal: transform Soldier Field into a world-class, multi-use venue that offers a premier experience year-round.

In collaboration with Landmark Development, EwingCole proposed a bold design featuring a new domed roof and enclosure system that creates a climate-controlled environment.

The renovation also includes expanded seating, enhanced amenities, and flexible programming spaces to accommodate a wide range of events.

These upgrades increase operational flexibility, ensure fan comfort throughout the year, and position the stadium to attract marquee events. The proposed expansion allows for a maximum capacity of 70,000 guests for large-scale experiences.

The modernization effort ensures Soldier Field remains a vital part of Chicago’s cultural and economic landscape—now built for the next century of play.

“EwingCole’s sports architects and engineers worked collaboratively with our project development team throughout the process to develop a comprehensive and compelling vision for the re-imagination of Soldier Field. From the ground level to the upper club areas, the designs, renderings, and animations they prepared really brought the stadium designs to life. Because EwingCole is a multidisciplinary firm with MEP and structural engineers with stadium expertise in-house, we were able to advance stadium concepts very quickly and receive more coordinated, accurate cost estimates from contractors.”
