Dynamic American History
A transformative renovation creates adaptable gallery spaces, enhances educational and performance venues, and modernizes infrastructure for sustainability and flexibility.
West Exhibition Wing Renovation
Washington, DC
The National Museum of American History houses nearly two million objects and over three shelf miles of archival collections. As part of a multi-year exhibit installation program, this renovation revitalizes the museum’s 120,000-square-foot west exhibition wing, creating more adaptable and engaging spaces. Regular collaboration with stakeholders from 14 departments led to a design that features flexible galleries, modular power, data systems, and integrated theatrical lighting for a seamless visitor experience.
Beyond exhibition spaces, the renovation introduces an Education Center designed as a hands-on learning lab and a state-of-the-art Music Hall that hosts the Smithsonian Chamber Music Society and Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. Perimeter window replacements, paired with automated interior shades, maximize views of the National Mall while protecting sensitive collections. A full facility infrastructure upgrade enhances HVAC and electrical flexibility, contributing to the building’s achievement of LEED Gold certification.
