A’s Clubhouse at Sutter Health Park

Sacramento, CA

The Athletics faced a complex and highly visible challenge – to establish a temporary home that could meet Major League Baseball standards while maintaining competitive performance and supporting both players and staff during a transitional chapter in the franchise’s history.

Sutter Health Park, a Triple-A facility, was not designed to accommodate the operational, training, and player development demands of a Major League team. The timeline was equally demanding. The stadium needed to be transformed in less than one year, all while maintaining readiness for Opening Day and continuing to serve its existing tenant, the Sacramento River Cats.

EwingCole partnered with Whiting-Turner to deliver a fast-tracked transformation that redefined the ballpark’s capabilities within its existing footprint. A new two-story, 16,000 SF clubhouse replaced an underutilized outfield area, introducing state-of-the-art spaces for training, recovery, nutrition, and team operations. Enhancements extended beyond the home clubhouse to include renovated visiting facilities, upgraded bullpens, improved umpire areas, and new infrastructure to support field maintenance and performance.

Every decision balanced speed, precision, and performance – aligning Major League standards with the constraints of an active Triple-A venue.

The Athletics gained a high-performance environment that supports player health, preparation, and daily operations at the highest level of the sport. The upgraded facilities ensure continuity in training and competition, allowing the team to remain focused and competitive during a multi-year transition.

At the same time, the improvements elevate the overall ballpark experience, enhancing amenities for fans and reinforcing the venue’s role as a destination for baseball and community events in Sacramento.

Delivered in under one year, the project stands as a clear demonstration of what coordinated design and construction can achieve under pressure. Sutter Health Park now operates as a dual-purpose facility capable of supporting both Triple-A and Major League teams, marking a significant milestone for the Athletics as they prepare for their future home in Las Vegas.
