Scott Barracks Modernization
West Point, NY
The United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point is renowned for its rigorous academic and military training programs, preparing Cadets to become leaders in service to the nation. Upholding its legacy while meeting the evolving needs of modern military education, USMA launched a comprehensive revitalization effort to upgrade nine existing barracks on its historic campus.
Scott Barracks, a 147,000-square-foot residence built in 1938 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was prioritized for modernization. The Academy sought to improve life safety, enhance cadet comfort, increase energy efficiency, and ensure compliance with updated Army design standards and building codes—all within a highly condensed timeline.
EwingCole led the complete interior and exterior renovation of Scott Barracks, combining historic preservation with performance-driven upgrades. Improvements included a state-of-the-art HVAC system, infrastructure modernization, integrated energy monitoring, and hydrothermal analysis. Exterior enhancements addressed stone masonry restoration and site design upgrades to improve wayfinding and pedestrian circulation.
This targeted strategy extended the building’s lifespan by fifty years, creating a more comfortable, efficient, and code-compliant residential environment for Cadets.
Delivered on an aggressive 12-month design and construction schedule, the project successfully balances heritage preservation and forward-looking military readiness.
