Since 1994, Prince George’s Stadium has been the home ground of the Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles organization, serving the Chesapeake Bay area in Bowie, Maryland. It plays a vital role in the Orioles’ player development program by offering emerging professional athletes the facilities and resources that help them move through the minor leagues.
The new player health, training, and development requirements introduced in Major League Baseball’s updated Professional Development League Facility Standards could no longer be fully met by the stadium as it currently exists. To modernize Prince George’s Stadium, the Maryland Stadium Authority chose the Gilbane/EwingCole design-build team to address space limitations in the existing clubhouses and create high-performance environments that meet current professional baseball standards.
Developing the Complete Player
The $50 million renovation focuses on constructing a new two-story home clubhouse and player performance area designed to cover the full range of an athlete’s daily routine. The facility brings together training, rehabilitation, conditioning, recovery, and team operations in a unified way so that the players have access to up-to-date facilities throughout the season.
The Baysox proudly represent the Chesapeake Bay area and use the waves and bridges as a part of their iconography. The building’s façade incorporates a wave pattern of vertical ribs in reflective silver metal panels, overlaid with a graphic of the Bay Bridges in the team’s orange and teal. Incorporating the large facility in the left-field outfield led to a design that stacked those functions above the locker rooms and other training functions, nestling next to the forest, with the existing hill providing access to both levels.
The indoor hitting and pitching arena on the 2nd level of the Home Clubhouse measures 14,500 square feet and greatly increases the Baysox’s ability to provide year-round development. This high-bay area includes two 55-by-55-foot hitting zones and two 15-by-75-foot hitting tunnels, offering a flexible setup that can accommodate a variety of training arrangements.
The design also considers the average player’s experience. Extensive glazing brings daylight and views of the surrounding landscape into the weight room, and the clubhouse includes spaces for the team to gather and relax in comfortable furniture, creating a strong sense of identity and belonging.
Raising the Standard
The renovation extends beyond the home team facilities to create a consistent professional environment throughout the ballpark. The visiting clubhouse is fully renovated and expanded, while new off-field bullpens provide covered, weather-protected mounds and catching areas. A new batter’s eye, field improvements, and sports lighting upgrades further support player performance and game-day operations.
Together, the improvements bring Prince George’s Stadium into compliance with MLB’s current PDL Facility Standards while establishing a stronger foundation for athlete development. The completed facility provides the Chesapeake Baysox and Baltimore Orioles organization with a high-performance setting designed to support players as they progress from minor league prospects toward the Major Leagues.
