Feeling the Squeeze
FNB Field Clubhouse Renovation
Harrisburg, PA
The Harrisburg Senators, the Double-A Eastern League affiliate of the Washington Nationals, play at FNB Field, a 6,200-seat waterfront ballpark located on Harrisburg’s City Island. Long recognized as a regional destination for baseball and community events, the venue required substantial upgrades to meet Major League Baseball’s new Professional Development League (PDL) standards and support the changing needs of players and staff.
To align the facility with modern player-development expectations, the project focused on expanding and modernizing the home and visiting clubhouses while improving training, recovery, and operational-support spaces. EwingCole designed a 16,940-square-foot renovation and addition that includes a new 9,990-square-foot, two-story home clubhouse addition along the third baseline, featuring a 1,600-square-foot weight room, upgraded locker rooms, dining and laundry facilities, and expanded training amenities. Renovations to the existing 6,950-square-foot visitors clubhouse beneath the grandstand improve functionality and circulation, while new female facilities support evolving league and staffing requirements.
Complex Site Constraints
The project required careful coordination on a highly constrained site within a federally protected waterway. Floodproof construction detailing, regulatory approvals, and tight spatial limitations shaped the design approach, particularly where the new clubhouse was inserted between the perimeter service road and elevated concourse without relocating two existing sports lighting poles.
Funding from Pennsylvania’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program and the City of Harrisburg helped bring the project to completion, reinforcing the venue’s long-term value to both the organization and the community.
The completed improvements position FNB Field to support the next generation of player development while preserving its identity as one of Minor League Baseball’s most distinctive waterfront venues.
