East Hospital and Parking Garage
Monroeville, PA
UPMC is known for pioneering innovative, cost-effective care models that place patients at the center of the healthcare experience. With the opportunity to build a new hospital from the ground up, UPMC East in Monroeville became a testing ground for strategies that improve outcomes while reducing cost and environmental impact.
Located on a reclaimed greyfield site, the 304,000-square-foot LEED Silver facility includes emergency, surgical, cardiac catheterization, imaging, endoscopy, ICU, medical/surgical units, laboratory, pharmacy, and dining services. Designers implemented a right-sized patient room strategy that reduced capital costs by nearly $5 million and is projected to save approximately $9 million in operational costs over the building’s life.
The campus also includes a helistop, healing gardens, public transit access, a 460-space multi-level parking garage, and enclosed walkways that enhance connectivity and convenience for patients and staff.
By integrating sustainable practices and research-driven planning, UPMC East delivers a forward-thinking care environment that aligns performance.
