Merging Elite Performance, Medicine, and Training
When the Penguins and UPMC first began discussing the creation of a facility like this, they traveled the country looking for something similar they could potentially emulate. As it happens, this facility is the first of its kind.
Lemieux Sports Complex & Medical Office Building
Cranberry, PA
UPMC and the Pittsburgh Penguins partnered to create a groundbreaking facility that combines professional sports, youth development, and cutting-edge medical care. The Lemieux Sports Complex and Medical Office Building serves as the official practice and training center for the Penguins while supporting athletes across western Pennsylvania with access to world-class resources.
The partners recognized the need for a facility that could unite sports performance training, injury treatment, and research in one integrated location. They envisioned a dynamic environment that supports both elite competition and community engagement.
EwingCole’s design delivered a 185,000-square-foot complex centered around four pillars: hockey, sports medicine, performance training, and research. The facility features two full-size ice rinks, seating for 1,500 spectators, a 1,500-square-foot hockey skills training zone, a café, a retail store, and multiple public-use areas. The 54,000-square-foot sports medicine clinic features private exam rooms, a physical therapy gym overlooking the main rink, aquatic therapy, and on-site imaging services, including MRI and X-ray facilities.
This unique model allows for seamless collaboration among orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, nutritionists, psychologists, and researchers. Youth hockey programs, amateur leagues, and community events thrive alongside professional training and clinical innovation.
As a result, the Lemieux Sports Complex has redefined what a sports medicine and performance facility can be—serving the region’s athletes and advancing the future of sports health and research.
