Judy C. Lewent ’70 Science Center Master Plan & Design

Towson, MD

Goucher College has long been recognized for its interdisciplinary liberal arts education and commitment to experiential learning. However, the Hoffberger Science Building, originally constructed in the 1950s, reflected an outdated educational model centered on paper-based instruction, rote memorization, and teacher-led learning environments.

As the college sought to expand its emphasis on science and technology, it needed facilities that could support modern pedagogy, collaboration, and hands-on exploration.

Repositioning Science at the Center of Campus Life

EwingCole provided campus master planning, programming, planning, and architectural design services for the transformation of the existing science facility into the new Judy C. Lewent ’70 Science Center. The project includes an 82,000-square-foot renovation and a 44,000-square-foot addition, along with improvements to the campus quadrangle that establish a new pedestrian gateway and reinforce the college’s renewed investment in STEM education.

The design reorganizes the building around student-centered learning environments that encourage collaboration and flexibility. Updated laboratory configurations support smaller learning groups, improve sight lines, and integrate advanced audiovisual technology, allowing instructors to move freely throughout the space rather than teaching from a fixed podium.

Inquiry-Based Learning and Community Interaction

Beyond the classrooms and laboratories, strategically located gathering areas foster interaction between students and faculty, creating opportunities for informal learning, discussion, and interdisciplinary exchange. The project-based learning environments align with Goucher’s educational philosophy by encouraging active exploration, critical thinking, and problem-solving.

The design also strengthens campus connectivity by creating welcoming, public-facing spaces that more directly integrate the science center into daily campus life.

Supporting STEM

The revitalized Judy C. Lewent ’70 Science Center positions Goucher College to better support contemporary teaching methods, interdisciplinary collaboration, and evolving scientific research. Through a combination of adaptive reuse, strategic expansion, and student-focused design, the project establishes a flexible academic environment prepared to support the next generation of learners and educators.

Sustainable Strategies Reinforce Long-Term Goals

The project is anticipated to achieve LEED Silver certification, reflecting the college’s commitment to sustainability and responsible campus development. High-performance building systems, daylight-filled interiors, and durable materials support energy efficiency while creating healthier learning environments for students and faculty.
