Child Life Clubhouse Renovation
Wilmington, DE
Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware, is nationally recognized for advancing pediatric health through clinical excellence, family-centered care, and innovation. To strengthen its holistic approach to healing, the hospital’s Department of Child Life, Creative Arts Therapy, and School Programs envisioned a renovated Clubhouse to better serve patients and families with emotional support, creative expression, and developmentally appropriate activities.
To bring this vision to life, the hospital adopted an Integrated Facility Design process that brought together Child Life staff, families, and patients. The design team conducted on-site observations and stakeholder interviews to understand the needs of each user group. Insights from medical professionals, educators, and caregivers informed a thoughtful plan for transforming the space.
The renovated Child Life Clubhouse now features a welcoming, 24-hour entrance that invites children and families into a comforting environment. A closed-circuit TV studio creates opportunities for virtual visits from celebrities and community partners. A new kitchen allows families to cook together and celebrate milestones. Dedicated zones serve children of all ages, from reading and sensory play to teen gaming and arts and music therapy. A flexible stage supports performances, events, and imaginative play.
