Designed to Adapt
A flexible approach to clinical planning transforms a historic industrial space into a contemporary cardiology practice that evolves with patient and provider needs.
Center for Advanced Medicine – Cardiology
North New Hyde Park, NY
Northwell Health provides comprehensive healthcare services throughout New York, bringing together specialists across medical disciplines to deliver coordinated, patient-centered care. Its Center for Advanced Medicine (CFAM) in North New Hyde Park houses multiple specialty practices within a repurposed World War II-era manufacturing building, creating opportunities for collaboration and shared resources.
As Northwell sought to relocate and expand its cardiology practice, the organization needed a design that could meet the immediate needs of specialized cardiac care while supporting the continued growth of other medical practices in the building. The challenge was to establish a functional, welcoming clinical environment that could adapt to changing programs without requiring extensive future renovations.
EwingCole designed the 8,678-square-foot cardiology practice, developing a flexible planning strategy that balances patient experience, clinical efficiency, and long-term adaptability. The project establishes a repeatable framework for future practice relocations and expansions, allowing the Center for Advanced Medicine to evolve as healthcare needs change.
Flexibility by Design
The clinical layout separates patient and family areas from staff workspaces and back-of-house support functions, creating distinct circulation patterns that improve privacy and operational efficiency. Carefully positioned clinical spaces maintain staff awareness of patient activity while supporting efficient movement between examination rooms, offices, and shared resources.
A modular planning approach lets practices reassign examination rooms, offices, and support spaces as they expand, merge, or change. Modular casework and partition systems provide additional flexibility, while shared mechanical, electrical, and plumbing infrastructure supports future modifications.
An Environment for Care
The design draws on the former manufacturing building’s architectural character, incorporating its existing clerestory windows to bring natural daylight deep into the clinical circulation areas. This connection to the building’s original architecture helps create a brighter, more welcoming environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
Together, these strategies create a clinical environment that can accommodate changing operational requirements while minimizing disruption to existing services.
The interior design extends this thoughtful approach into clinical spaces, where clean finishes, integrated storage, and carefully organized equipment support efficient examinations and treatment.
By combining adaptable infrastructure with patient-centered interior design, the Northwell Center for Advanced Medicine Cardiology practice provides a model for accommodating specialized healthcare services within an existing building. The project demonstrates how flexible planning can extend the useful life of clinical environments while supporting the evolving needs of patients, caregivers, and healthcare organizations.
