Cellares is an innovative biotechnology company focused on transforming cell and gene therapy manufacturing. By combining automation with scalable processes, the company has positioned itself as a leader in making advanced therapies more efficient and accessible. To support rapid growth, Cellares needed a commercial-scale facility that could serve as the blueprint for future sites in the U.S. and abroad.
As a long-term A/E partner, EwingCole developed a universal and flexible design solution that supports the growth of its commercial-scale cell & gene therapy manufacturing for both autologous and allogeneic products.
The 118,000-square-foot facility in Bridgewater, New Jersey, consolidates critical operations into a single site. The build-out includes a large production room, media fill, quality control and MSAT laboratories, a materials management warehouse, shipping and storage areas, maintenance and calibration spaces, and administrative offices. The holistic layout improves efficiency while ensuring high standards of quality control.
Research-Informed Design
EwingCole’s Design Research team utilized simulation modeling to refine Cellares’ facility design and operations, right-sizing spaces, adjusting layouts, and informing procedures. The model demonstrated that the facility could meet its initial production goals and scale operations by 1,600 percent in adjacent shell space, providing proof of concept that helped Cellares secure clientele.
The main entrance lobby showcases Cellares’ Cell Shuttle™ technology within an inviting space designed to make a strong first impression. This area also marks the start of a dedicated tour route, providing multiple vantage points into the labs and production areas.
The interior design is deeply brand-centric, drawing inspiration directly from the Cell Shuttle. Clean lines, crisp whites, and saturated blues define the collaborative zones, reinforcing the company’s visual identity. Soft curves throughout the space echo the shuttle’s form, while open ceilings with cloud-like acoustic elements preserve both height and sound quality. Graphic branding accents punctuate each area, with Cellares’ blue integrated into the flooring, ceilings, and furnishings, creating a cohesive and vibrant atmosphere.
A Model for Future Facilities
The Bridgewater facility establishes a scalable design framework that can be replicated worldwide. By prioritizing flexibility, efficiency, and transparency, the facility enables Cellares to expand its production capacity, strengthen its workforce, and accelerate the delivery of life-changing therapies.
