EwingCole Wins Gold at the Healthcare Design Interior Design Awards for Hope Plaza
Duarte, CA (May 2025) – EwingCole is proud to announce that Hope Plaza, the nine-story outpatient cancer center at City of Hope in Duarte, California, has received the Gold Award in the 2025 Healthcare Design Magazine Interior Design Awards.
Developed in collaboration with CO Architects, Hope Plaza exemplifies a transformative approach to cancer care design. At 350,000 SF, the facility serves as the new clinical anchor of City of Hope’s northeast campus, offering a fully integrated model of care that includes treatment, research, diagnostics, and support services all under one roof.
EwingCole prioritized the patient experience emotionally and operationally from the earliest concept phases.
“The team set out to design a sanctuary,” said EwingCole Principal and Director of Healthcare Planning Mary Frazier, AIA, LEED AP. “A place where patients feel empowered and cared for during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.”
EwingCole’s interior concept deliberately moves beyond standard clinical aesthetics, introducing a spa-like sensibility through a warm palette of wood and stone textures. These materials, paired with sweeping views of the neighboring San Gabriel Mountains, serve to soothe and ground patients during some of their most vulnerable moments. The design team prioritized daylighting across all patient care areas, particularly in infusion treatment spaces, where each bay offers expansive mountain vistas. These moments of connection to nature promote visual relief and reinforce circadian rhythms and a sense of calm.

Hope Plaza’s layout is highly efficient and intuitive. Symmetrical planning minimizes patient travel distances, allowing for functional flexibility and spatial clarity. Travel paths are deliberately minimized, ensuring patients can easily access infusion bays, exam clinics, imaging, and support services with ease. This integrated layout enables multidisciplinary teams to collaborate seamlessly, bringing together treatment, research, diagnostics, and amenities under one roof.
“Cancer often leaves patients feeling powerless,” said Frazier. “EwingCole’s interior concept is a sanctuary of healing that offers a variety of experiences, empowering patients by putting some of that control back in their hands.”
More than a treatment center, Hope Plaza is a blueprint for the future of outpatient cancer care, merging beauty, function, and compassion. EwingCole is honored to have this work recognized by Healthcare Design Magazine in their 2025 Interior Design Awards.
