In 2004, administrators decided to build the Hood Center for Health specifically to provide collaboration between researchers and clinicians, as well as host guest lectures. EwingCole, which has a more-than-40-year history of designing for Geisinger Health System, designed a facility situated to exemplify its purpose: People coming from the clinical and research buildings cross paths at the center. The new facility was Geisinger’s first LEED certified facility and includes innovative green strategies, for example, an easily viewed green roof, innovative lighting systems, a local metal wall panel skin, and an open plan to allow daylight to penetrate deeper into many of the conference center spaces. The year following the project’s opening, the entire healthcare campuses’ utility bills actually dropped, even with 67,000 square feet of new building space, because a new HVAC central utility plant was added, allowing the new facility to perform 40% better than the ASHRAE 90.1 energy code. The project serves as both a popular healthcare campus destination and a well-managed and efficient facility year round.
