To expand its capabilities to serve its patients in central New York, Upstate Medical University decided to transform its outpatient and inpatient cancer program through the design of a new Cancer Center. EwingCole designed this 97,000 sq. ft. facility on the site that serves as the gateway to the University and Hospital in Syracuse, New York. The primary design objective was to create a comforting and encouraging experience for cancer patients at every moment in their visit, from arrival by car to check-in, waiting, consultation, treatment, scheduling and other activities. The design takes advantage of the building’s location on the site to create a three-story atrium that connects all major circulation routes, bringing daylight and sunlight indoors, and uses warm, natural materials and finishes throughout. A large green roof, heavily vegetated, provides a relaxing vista for chemotherapy patients. The integrated cancer care approach includes linear accelerators, diagnostic imaging (PET/CT, CT, MRI, Digital X-ray, Ultrasound) chemotherapy infusion, pediatric hemoncology, surgery and procedure, exam and consult rooms. A patient library offers educational resources. The cancer patient experience was the touchstone for every design decision. Clarity, tranquility, visual stimulation, outdoor vistas, sunlight, daylight, control of choices and social support are major objectives of the design.
