In 2006, Saint John’s Health Center embarked on a significant redesign and remodel program called “Millennium” in order to increase the bed capacity of the facility. The remodel of the Chan Soon-Shiong Center for Life Sciences involves four distinct projects that are constructed in an occupied inpatient building that provides the services of labor and delivery with NICU, medsurg, orthopedic and ICU patient beds. EwingCole was commissioned to provide full architectural and engineering services. The $30 million Millennium project is comprised of several projects to include master planning for the new 125,000 square-foot Chan Soon-Shion Center for Life Sciences building to increase bed capacity. Relocation of hospital administration offices for the CEO/COO and Vice Presidents’ executive office spaces include conference space to be shared as a mini-conference center with the rest of the hospital. Extensive renovations to the second and fourth floors to increase patient bedrooms comprise a major portion of the design team’s programming and planning phase.
