Sanford USD Medical Center

EwingCole developed a master plan for Sanford Children’s Hospital that combined four parcels of land and closed two city streets. This design created a 179,000 sf, five story children’s hospital with future vertical expansion for two additional floors. It also provided expansion to the north for an additional tower. Sanford Children’s Hospital provides 78 private beds and 20 sibling beds. The nursing units provide general medical/surgical beds, pediatric intensive care unit, step-down beds, and 12 beds that are atmospherically controlled to protect cancer patients. Twelve of the general patient rooms will have additional medical gas outlets to accommodate neonatal intensive care patients on an overflow basis. The children’s hospital also contains a 35,000 square foot multispecialty clinic and offices for 36 physicians. The clinic also provides outpatient physical therapy and an oncology infusion area with a heppa filtered HVAC system. An imaging suite supports the clinic as well as the inpatient units. The children’s hospital is connected to the main 487 bed hospital on three levels. The lower level provides a service connection for utilities and supplies. A ground level pedestrian connector allows access to the main hospital entrance while a second floor bridge links the hospital to the surgical suite.
