Planning took the approach of developing a suite of interventions in all spaces which greatly enhance utilization of these monumental spaces, improve visitor experience and staff capacity. While the US Custom House at Bowling Green is one of the finest buildings in NYC, virtually every space is historically protected which has prevented GGHC from fully utilizing its potential to create a consistent visitor experience. A decade after opening, the museum is prepared to offer new programs and an enhanced visitor experience. By undertaking this plan, GGHC identified new synergies among departments, opportunities to use some protected spaces programmatically within preservation guidelines.
