Developing a comprehensive plan attracted support and enabled the renewal to not only renew exhibits and the building, but the public’s perception of The Franklin Institute. Little had been improved since opening in 1933: seventy years later, renewal was necessary. By developing a detailed masterplan under clear institutional priorities, the Cultural Design Group tailored the final scope within TFI’s $50 million budget. The nine phases were documented and built over the course of 5 years to minimize impact on visitors and staff and to enable the design team to ‘tune’ each phase as new opportunities developed. TFI has emerged as the most visited museum in the region with all new exhibits, an enhanced visitor experience and a more sustainable business plan.
