Adaptive Re-use Much loved old campus buildings often outlive their original purposes. Adaptive reuse retains a building’s historic features while adapting it to new purposes. An old laboratory may become a classroom building or an old church may find new life as a dining hall. An important advantage of adaptive reuse is sustainability. The resources and energy that were once used to create our campuses may be squandered when these buildings are demolished. We regard adaptive re-use as preservation of a campus asset. Historic Campus Landmarks are an important reminder of our history and educational legacy. As with any institution over time, the spirit of a place – its buildings, its people and its community – moves traditions to unfold. A simple action evolves into a rite of passage or an annual event, a phase into a legendary saying or a rallying call for fans. A place becomes a gathering spot for friends long after their student days are past. Sustainable EwingCole’s design philosophy strives for sustainable buildings that enrich the human condition and complement the context of the campus. We design cost-effective buildings appropriate to the culture, climate and geographic area. A EwingCole academic facility represents the intrinsic values of those who occupy them.
